從英語發(fā)展的歷史中我們知道，現(xiàn)代英語的祖先是日耳曼語言的持有者盎格魯-撒克遜人的語言，他們于公元449年從北方歐洲大陸登陸不列顛，占據(jù)了本屬于凱爾特人的土地，吸收了少量的凱爾特人的語言。以后隨著希臘羅馬文化在羅馬帝國統(tǒng)治期間以及文藝復(fù)興時期的兩次大規(guī)模傳播，英語吸收了大量的希臘語和拉丁語的詞匯，其中很多以詞根的形式保留下來。
　　下面我們選擇了在現(xiàn)代英語中出現(xiàn)頻率較高的一些詞根，供大家學(xué)習(xí)記憶。在學(xué)習(xí)的過程中需要注意的是，這些詞根在構(gòu)成新詞的時候，受前后語音的自然影響，往往不止有一種形式，這個一般在括號內(nèi)已標出。
