不久前的一天，我從長沙乘火車去上海看望一位朋友。在車站的候車在廳聽見幾個在一起“策”英語，結果不知不覺地話題轉到“英語有點怪”這一問題上。

E：其實，英語不僅不分“上下”，有時還不分“大小”。

B：舉例說說?

E：比如說，英語中有個習語叫a large fortune，其意為“一大筆錢”。如：

He is the master of a large fortune. 他能隨意處置一大筆財產。

She inherited a large fortune. 她繼承了一大筆財產。

但你知道a small fortune是什么意思嗎?你千萬不要以為它的意思是“很少的錢”。其實，a small fortune與a large fortune不是反義詞，而是同義詞，均表示“很多錢”“一大筆錢”。如(from www.nmet168.com)：

The car cost me a small fortune. 這輛汽車花了我很多錢。

My first painting sold for £25, a small [large] fortune then for an art student. 我的第一幅畫賣了25英鎊，當時對一名學藝術的學生來說，算是一大筆錢了。

A：有意思，有意思，太有意思了!與你們遇到的情況相似，我有時覺得英語“好不好”是一樣，“壞不壞”是一樣，“高不高”是一樣，“長不長”也可能是一樣。

B：能舉例說明嗎?

A：我說“好不好”是一樣，是指有些英語句子中有good和沒有good都可以說，且意思不變。如：

I wish you (good) luck. 祝你好運。

Your (good) health! 為您的健康干杯!

Those who are absent without (good) excuse will be dismissed. 無故缺席者一律開除。

C：那“壞不壞”一樣有實例嗎?

A：有，并且我舉的例子都是來自權威詞典，你們看我這本子上抄的：

She was ashamed of her children’s (bad) behavior. 她因為她的孩子不規(guī)矩而感到羞愧。

E：那“高不高”又怎么一樣呢?

A：比如(from www.nmet168.com)：

He had [ran] a (high) temperature for three days. 他一連3天發(fā)高燒。

I think it’s (high) time that she made up her mind. 我想她該拿定主意了。

C：關于“長不長”都一樣也有實例嗎?

A：有。請看：

At (long) last we found out what had really happened. 最后，我們終于弄清了實際發(fā)生的情況。

The nurse sat by the patient all night (long). 護士整夜守在病人身旁。
